Gentleness: Enjoy it while it lasts! Judgement is coming!

Gentleness: Enjoy it while it lasts! Judgement is coming!

One of the fruit of the spirit is gentleness. Fruit is singular because you get all of this fruit at the time of salvation! We need to understand what gentleness is and also access to gentleness will soon come to an end!

But the fruit of the Spirit is love, joy, peace, longsuffering, gentleness, goodness, faith, Meekness, temperance: against such there is no law. (Galatians 5:22-23)

Gentleness Verses!

There are three more verses (a total of four.  The word gentle has five) out of the entire Bible that mention the word gentleness, then there are a few more versus to look at from using the concordance that link to the same word in the Hebrew and Greek.

Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great. (2 Samuel 22:36)

Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great. (Psalms 18:35)

Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: (2 Corinthians 10:1)

Gentle Verses!

In addition, there are verses that have the word gentle in them.

But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: (1 Thessalonians 2:7)

And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, (2 Timothy 2:24)

To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. (Titus 3:2)

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy. (James 3:17)

Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward. (1 Peter 2:18)

Gentleness and gentle definitions!

Gentleness in the 1828 dictionary has a great definition of the word gentleness.

1. Genteel behavior.
2. Softness of manners; mildness of temper; sweetness of disposition; meekness.
3. Kindness; benevolence.
4. Tenderness; mild treatment.

Gentle has a little more meaning to it.

1. Mild; meek; soft; bland; not rough, harsh or severe; as a gentle nature, temper or disposition; a gentle manner; address; voice. 1 Th 27. 2 Tim 2.

2. Tame; peaceable; not wild, turbulent or refractory; as a gentle horse or beast.

3. Soothing; pacific.

4. Treating with mildness; not violent.
A gentle hand may lead the elephant with a hair.

GEN’TLE, n. A gentleman.

1. A kind of worm.
GEN’TLE, v.t. To make genteel; to raise from the vulgar.

David’s Gentleness!

In 1 Samuel David talks about how gentleness made him great!  It is a great feeling to have a gentle God.  David associates his salvation with gentleness!

God is my strength and power: and he maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet: and setteth me upon my high places. He teacheth my hands to war; so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy gentleness hath made me great.  (2 Samuel 22:33-36)

In the Psalms, it is David once again comparing his salvation to gentleness!

It is God that girdeth me with strength, and maketh my way perfect. He maketh my feet like hinds’ feet, and setteth me upon my high places. He teacheth my hands to war, so that a bow of steel is broken by mine arms. Thou hast also given me the shield of thy salvation: and thy right hand hath holden me up, and thy gentleness hath made me great.  (Psalms 18:32-35)

Paul’s Gentleness!

Paul combines meekness with gentleness and states that they are “of Christ” which means that gentleness can only come from Christ. You must be born again to have gentleness moreover, Galatians 5 clearly says that gentleness is the fruit of the spirit! We cannot have gentleness when we are lost and destined for hell in addition we cannot have the gentleness of God without being born again!

Now I Paul myself beseech you by the meekness and gentleness of Christ, who in presence am base among you, but being absent am bold toward you: But I beseech you, that I may not be bold when I am present with that confidence, wherewith I think to be bold against some, which think of us as if we walked according to the flesh.  (2 Corinthians 10:1-2)

The Gentle Breakdown!

Paul told the Thessalonians that he was gentle with them and compared that gentleness as a nurse that cherishes her chidren!

For yourselves, brethren, know our entrance in unto you, that it was not in vain: But even after that we had suffered before, and were shamefully entreated, as ye know, at Philippi, we were bold in our God to speak unto you the gospel of God with much contention. For our exhortation was not of deceit, nor of uncleanness, nor in guile: But as we were allowed of God to be put in trust with the gospel, even so we speak; not as pleasing men, but God, which trieth our hearts. For neither at any time used we flattering words, as ye know, nor a cloke of covetousness; God is witness: Nor of men sought we glory, neither of you, nor yet of others, when we might have been burdensome, as the apostles of Christ. But we were gentle among you, even as a nurse cherisheth her children: So being affectionately desirous of you, we were willing to have imparted unto you, not the gospel of God only, but also our own souls, because ye were dear unto us.  (1 Thessalonians 2:1-8)

Gentleness to ALL Men!

Paul says in 2 Timothy that born again believers need to be gentle to ALL men! That can be pretty hard to do at times!

If a man therefore purge himself from these, he shall be a vessel unto honour, sanctified, and meet for the master’s use, and prepared unto every good work. Flee also youthful lusts: but follow righteousness, faith, charity, peace, with them that call on the Lord out of a pure heart. But foolish and unlearned questions avoid, knowing that they do gender strifes. And the servant of the Lord must not strive; but be gentle unto all men, apt to teach, patient, In meekness instructing those that oppose themselves; if God peradventure will give them repentance to the acknowledging of the truth; And that they may recover themselves out of the snare of the devil, who are taken captive by him at his will.  (2 Timothy 2:21-26)

Paul states to be gentle in combination of meekness to all men again in Titus.

To speak evil of no man, to be no brawlers, but gentle, shewing all meekness unto all men. (Titus 3:2)

God’s Wisdom is Gentle!

James states that God’s wisdom is gentle!

But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, and easy to be intreated, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality, and without hypocrisy.  (James 3:17)

Servants Be Gentle!

Peter says that servants need to be gentle to their masters!  In other words, we are to be gentle to those we serve!

Servants, be subject to your masters with all fear; not only to the good and gentle, but also to the froward.  (1 Peter 2:18)

Access to Gentleness Will End and Judgement Will Begin!

Understand that this gentleness will come to an end when the Judgement of God comes! There will be no more ability to be become born again! There is coming a day when God and born again believers will judge the world in righteousness! If you don’t think born again believers will be judging the world, you need to read 1 Corinthians 6:1-3.

Meekness or gentleness will soon go away because Zephaniah says

Seek ye the LORD, all ye meek of the earth, which have wrought his judgment; seek righteousness, seek meekness: it may be ye shall be hid in the day of the LORD’S anger. (Zephaniah 2:3)

If you don’t have gentleness then you will deal with God’s anger on judgement day!  In other words if you don’t become born again, then you are destined for God’s wrath that is to come!  Change that now before it is too late!

Come unto me, all ye that labour and are heavy laden, and I will give you rest. Take my yoke upon you, and learn of me; for I am meek and lowly in heart: and ye shall find rest unto your souls. For my yoke is easy, and my burden is light. (Matthew 11:28-30)
