Characteristics of a godly man
Characteristics of a godly man are very important. A Godly man will reveal his true heart. If you hang out with any one person long enough you will find out who they really are.
There are many times I have worked with men that are born again and realize that during worship service they are one person and outside they are another.
Sometimes this is a huge struggle for men because of the environment they are in. It also can be based on their maturity level in their relationship with Christ. We need to seek God’s face to get a hold of this.
Here are some Characteristics of a godly man that will encourage, edify, challenge, and convict to steer you towards a goal of becoming the man that God called you to be! This also applies to characteristics of a godly husband! If you want to read a great post from a woman’s perspective, please read the blog post titled “You Deserve A Godly Man”
1. Characteristics of a godly man: He is the Word
This is the most important characteristic to work on. Because the Word of God is the source of all Christianity! You take that away, you don’t have Christianity! A majority of men, do not like to read. I am one of them. (I know a writer that doesn’t like to read. Crazy huh?) I may not like to read, but one of the books I DO read is God’s Word!
I realized early in my walk that reading God’s Word is not an option.
I should be in the Book every single day at all costs! Over the past several months I have committed to reading the book of Proverbs one chapter a day and when done I start all over. The Book of Proverbs is full of wisdom! When I drive to work in the mornings, instead of listening to the news channels or music of some sort. I turn on the Proverb for the day, and put it in a loop so I can listen to that chapter over and over and over again! There are so many verses in the Bible that command “men” to study, to read, to apply the Word of God!
- We are to STUDY to be quiet! Why? That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing!
1 Thessalonians 4:8-12 He therefore that despiseth, despiseth not man, but God, who hath also given unto us his holy Spirit. (9) But as touching brotherly love ye need not that I write unto you: for ye yourselves are taught of God to love one another. (10) And indeed ye do it toward all the brethren which are in all Macedonia: but we beseech you, brethren, that ye increase more and more; (11) And that ye study to be quiet, and to do your own business, and to work with your own hands, as we commanded you; (12) That ye may walk honestly toward them that are without, and that ye may have lack of nothing.
- We are to STUDY to shew thyself approved! Why? Not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth! You want to have the approval of God? Then get in the book!
2 Timothy 2:15 Study to shew thyself approved unto God, a workman that needeth not to be ashamed, rightly dividing the word of truth.
- We are to READ the Book! Why? For doctrine and exhortation!
1 Timothy 4:13 Till I come, give attendance to reading, to exhortation, to doctrine.
Isaiah 34:16 Seek ye out of the book of the LORD, and read:
- Why should we read the Book? What is in it for me? This passage explains it all for you!
2 Timothy 3:16-17 All scripture is given by inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, for reproof, for correction, for instruction in righteousness: (17) That the man of God may be perfect, throughly furnished unto all good works.
2. Characteristics of a godly man: He prays!
This is a characteristic that every godly man can improve upon. If you want to be moved to change your way of prayer, you need to read the the book called Fresh Encounters By Daniel Henderson. This book will change your prayer life!
Prayer should never be an option or a compromise! Prayer should be the very essence of our relationship with Christ! The Bible talks so much about prayer. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.
James 5:13-18 Is any among you afflicted? let him pray. Is any merry? let him sing psalms. (14) Is any sick among you? let him
call for the elders of the church; and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord: (15) And the prayer of faith shall save the sick, and the Lord shall raise him up; and if he have committed sins, they shall be forgiven him. (16) Confess your faults one to another, and pray one for another, that ye may be healed. The effectual fervent prayer of a righteous man availeth much.(17) Elias was a man subject to like passions as we are, and he prayed earnestly that it might not rain: and it rained not on the earth by the space of three years and six months. (18) And he prayed again, and the heaven gave rain, and the earth brought forth her fruit.
1 Timothy 4:4-5 For every creature of God is good, and nothing to be refused, if it be received with thanksgiving: (5) For it is sanctified by the word of God and prayer.
1 Thessalonians 5:17 Pray without ceasing.
SIN hinders prayer! If you are married, you are one flesh(one team) and if there are issues between you and your wife, then your prayers are hindered as well!
Psalms 66:18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, the Lord will not hear me:
1 Peter 3:7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
3. Characteristics of a godly man: He loves!
A godly man’s love is different than a woman’s love, and characteristics of a true man of God will reflect that! I believe that is the reason why the Word of God says we need to have unconditional agape love!
Men, if you are married, the Bible commands you to LOVE your wives! It never says your wife is to love you! It says they she should submit(respect) you!
Ephesians 5:25-31 Husbands, love your wives, even as Christ also loved the church, and gave himself for it; (26) That he might sanctify and cleanse it with the washing of water by the word, (27) That he might present it to himself a glorious church, not having spot, or wrinkle, or any such thing; but that it should be holy and without blemish. (28) So ought men to love their wives as their own bodies. He that loveth his wife loveth himself. (29) For no man ever yet hated his own flesh; but nourisheth and cherisheth it, even as the Lord the church: (30) For we are members of his body, of his flesh, and of his bones. (31) For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh.
A godly man LOVES the Word! If we are in the Word faithfully nothing will offend us! If you get offended, how is your reading of the Word? Is it hit and miss or is it consistent?
Psalms 119:165 Great peace have they which love thy law: and nothing shall offend them.
Love covers all sins! If you are not saved, the blood of Christ’s love can deliver you from your sin, and make you as white as snow!
Proverbs 10:12 Hatred stirreth up strifes: but love covereth all sins.
John 3:16 For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in him should not perish, but have everlasting life
Romans 13:8 Owe no man any thing, but to love one another: for he that loveth another hath fulfilled the law.
4. Characteristics of a godly man: He teaches!
A characteristic of a godly man is willing to teach others! We are commanded to teach according to the great commission!
Matthew 28:18-20 And Jesus came and spake unto them, saying, All power is given unto me in heaven and in earth. (19) Go ye therefore, and teach all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost: (20) Teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you: and, lo, I am with you alway, even unto the end of the world. Amen.
2 Timothy 2:1-2 Thou therefore, my son, be strong in the grace that is in Christ Jesus. (2) And the things that thou hast heard of me among many witnesses, the same commit thou to faithful men, who shall be able to teach others also.
When we are not willing to teach others, such as getting involved in ministry to teach children, kids or adults, then we will not grow towards being a godly man!
We need to be the spiritual leaders in our family if we are married, teach our children the right way to follow the Lord, represent the Lord for our children, and to instill godly principles in them so they can endure the attacks of the world and the devil!
All of these characteristics of a godly man will help you grow in your relationship with Christ.
It takes time, patience, and determination. I hope and pray you will consider all the verses in this post and apply them to your life. If you need to talk feel free to shoot me an email. a private message on Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, or Pintrest.
