This chapter is straight from the heart of Paul. He mentions works and how that does not work and cannot get you to heaven. He mentions the grace of God and how Abraham was counted righteousness for trusting in God! It was not based on him getting circumcised. That is what religion wants. Most false religions and false teachings spur from a works based doctrine! Paul asks several questions in the beginning and points you back to scripture of the old testament Genesis 15:6.
Paul explains simply in Romans 4:4 Now to him that worketh is the reward not reckoned of grace, but of debt. If you are working you are working off a debt. Realizing we cannot work of the debt we owe to the Lord! Our sin will never be forgiven unless we do it through GRACE and the shed blood of the Lord Jesus Christ! Paul mentions three times how blessed is the man that the Lord will not impute sin, He even references Psalms 32:2 Blessed is the man unto whom the LORD imputeth not iniquity, and in whose spirit there is no guile.
Words Looked Up:
|8||Impute||To charge; to attribute; to set to the account of; generally ill, sometimes good. We impute crimes, sins, trespasses, faults, blame, &c., to the guilty persons. We impute wrong actions to bad motives, or to ignorance, or to folly and rashness. We impute misfortunes and miscarriages to imprudence.|
|10||Reckoned||Counted; numbered; esteemed; reputed; computed; set or assigned to in account.|
Thank God I don’t have to work to keep or to earn my salvation! It is a simple repentance and putting your faith and trust in the Lord Jesus Christ! That is the truth about justification! I need to realize that there is no amount of religion that will get me any brownie points to heaven. My relationship with Christ is just that. A relationship! A relationship just like I have with friends and family. Verse 18 talks about Abraham and how his body may be old and broken, his faith was not! Romans 4:19 And being not weak in faith, he considered not his own body now dead, when he was about an hundred years old, neither yet the deadness of Sara’s womb:
Faith is the key not religion! Grace is the key not religion! Jesus is the only way! His blood is the only cleanser of all my sin!
