Verses About A Solar Eclipse in the Bible

With the upcoming solar eclipse of 2017 I wanted to discuss a few verses  that refer to a solar eclipse event.

God uses a solar eclipse as a sign of judgement!

The context of this solar eclipse is Isaiah 13:1 The burden of Babylon, which Isaiah the son of Amoz did see.  We can now jump down to Isaiah 13:9-11 Behold, the day of the LORD cometh, cruel both with wrath and fierce anger, to lay the land desolate: and he shall destroy the sinners thereof out of it. (10) For the stars of heaven and the constellations thereof shall not give their light: the sun shall be darkened in his going forth, and the moon shall not cause her light to shine. (11) And I will punish the world for their evil, and the wicked for their iniquity; and I will cause the arrogancy of the proud to cease, and will lay low the haughtiness of the terrible.  This passage was a prophetic solar eclipse that happened at the destruction of Babylon.  it is interesting to note that God uses this solar eclipse as a sign.  Notice it says the sun shall be be darkened and “the moon” shall not cause her light to shine, a perfect picture of a solar eclipse of the Bible!

God uses a solar eclipse as a sign of His second coming!

The key phrase that puts this solar eclipse in the second coming according to verse 11 of this passage. I put the phrase in italics and set to a larger font size.. Joel 2:10-11 The earth shall quake before them; the heavens shall tremble: the sun and the moon shall be dark, and the stars shall withdraw their shining: (11) And the LORD shall utter his voice before his army: for his camp is very great: for he is strong that executeth his word: for the day of the LORD is great and very terrible; and who can abide it? Another passage from the same chapter.  Joel 2:30-32 And I will shew wonders in the heavens and in the earth, blood, and fire, and pillars of smoke. (31) The sun shall be turned into darkness, and the moon into blood, before the great and the terrible day of the LORD come. (32) And it shall come to pass, that whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered: for in mount Zion and in Jerusalem shall be deliverance, as the LORD hath said, and in the remnant whom the LORD shall call. Notice the final verse in this chapter.  It is interesting to note that solar eclipse in this context is the second coming and it says whosoever shall call on the name of the LORD shall be delivered and not “saved”.  That would be something to dig into further!

More second coming passages are Matthew 24:29-30 Immediately after the tribulation of those days shall the sun be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, and the stars shall fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens shall be shaken: (30) And then shall appear the sign of the Son of man in heaven: and then shall all the tribes of the earth mourn, and they shall see the Son of man coming in the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. Matthew 24 is commonly taken out of context and dropped in to current day events.  This is not correct because Matthew 24 is about Jesus’ return and the great tribulation. The contextual verse is Matthew 24:3 And as he sat upon the mount of Olives, the disciples came unto him privately, saying, Tell us, when shall these things be? and what shall be the sign of thy coming, and of the end of the world?  Mark 13 is a parallel of Matthew 24 from the viewpoint of Mark.  It says in Mark 13:24-26 But in those days, after that tribulation, the sun shall be darkened, and the moon shall not give her light, (25) And the stars of heaven shall fall, and the powers that are in heaven shall be shaken. (26) And then shall they see the Son of man coming in the clouds with great power and glory.

God uses a solar eclipse as a sign of the end of the tribulation!

It says in Revelation 6:12-13 And I beheld when he had opened the sixth seal, and, lo, there was a great earthquake; and the sun became black as sackcloth of hair, and the moon became as blood; (13) And the stars of heaven fell unto the earth, even as a fig tree casteth her untimely figs, when she is shaken of a mighty wind.  Not only will there be a solar eclipse, but there will also be a lunar eclipse as well!
